The primary focus of cards in the Balance Transfer category is to not only permit the transfer of balances from another card, but to also have a low rate for either an introductory period, or a permanent low rate. These cards can be an excellent way to save substantial interest for those in a situation where they carry a monthly balance on a high rate card. Be sure to make timely monthly payments since the default rates applied when payments are missed will surely negate any benefits from making the transfer. Finally, many issuers offer bonuses and rewards so these must be examined to get the best deal.

Balance Transfer
Insights:

The category of Balance Transfer is, as its name implies, those cards that lend themselves toward transferring the balance from a higher APR card to a lower APR card.  When these offers first became popular several years ago, most consumers could immediately gain a nice savings by transferring their balance from what was a substantially higher APR to a more reasonable rate. This process of shuffling balance amongst different banks has lead to some changes in the programs offered by almost all issuers.

First and foremost, look for a balance transfer fee.  This will be a percentage charged for the privilege of accepting the lower rate.  Most cards today have a transfer that can offset some of the savings you will enjoy from the low rate offer.  Also, consider the length of the lower or zero rate offer.  If the transfer charge is 5% and the term is 6 months of 0%, you are still incurring a 10% annual charge that may be more than your current rate. On the other hand a 2% fee over 18 months results in %1.3 over the course of the intro period.

On the flip side, the new Card Act legislation has a great new rule. Any payment that you make on your card that is in excess of the interest portion of your bill must be applied to the highest rate balance first. Thus, if you transfer in a balance at 0% for 12 months and routinely pay extra each month, you will see your higher rate principle dwindle faster.

Still one of the most popular categories of credit card offers, Balance Transfers now require a little bit of math before jumping in with the idea of having truly free money.
